Massive fire breaks out at a labour accommodation in Al Ain

Four people were treated for smoke inhalation and shortness of breath after a massive fire broke out in a labour accommodation in Al Hili Industrial area in Al Ain on Saturday. The fire gutted 40 caravans that include 80 rooms accommodating 640 workers. Al Ain Police Operation Room received a call and rushed to the scene immediately.

Man hurt in flipping lorry

A lorry driver has been seriously injured after the vehicle he was driving overturned on a roundabout. The driver, was immediately taken to Al-Mafraq Hospital near Al Ain for treatment. Police received an emergency call at 9am yesterday about the accident at Al Ain. “We rushed to the scene and saw a truck loaded with electric cables,” an official from Al Ain police said. “We directed traffic and transferred the driver of the lorry to hospital.” Fuel was leaking from the vehicle and had to be cleared by civil defence.

Arrest after body dumped in desert

A man has been arrested after a businessman’s body was found in the desert near Al Ain International Airport, his family said yesterday. The cause of death has yet to be confirmed, but family members said there were multiple wounds to the front and back of his head. “He went missing on Sunday. It was about nine at night, after prayers. He was working in one of the shops and it was very busy. “Somebody came inside and said he wanted to talk to him. He was waiting in a car outside.“The man in the car said he wanted to talk about a new contract.”

Labourers are rescued

Nineteen caravans were gutted and 190 labourers evacuated after a gas cylinder exploded. The fire broke out at 10am yesterday at a camp on the road between Al Ain and Abu Dhabi. Colonel Saeed Salim of Al-Ain Police said: “We fought against the blaze for two hours and finally managed to control it. “Explosions continued to go off while we were fighting the fire,” he added. No one was hurt in the blaze.

Boy dies in boot

A four-year-old boy has died after climbing into the boot of the family car and becoming trapped. After realising her son was missing from the family home, his desperate mother drove around the Al Basrah area of Al Ain for 90 minutes looking for him unaware he was dying in the back of the car. His mother, a primary school teacher, eventually found him in the boot of the car and took him to hospital. Despite frantic efforts to revive him, Usama Al Najar was pronounced dead in hospital. A doctor at Al Ain Hospital said: “We saw a speeding car reach the hospital and a mother got out holding her baby, crying and pleading for help. She was yelling and crying. Her child’s heart had stopped. It was a tragic scene.”
