A police officer, a police cadet and an immigration official are among five UAE nationals arrested for drug possession, a source in Dubai Public Prosecution told Khaleej Times. The Dubai Police Anti–Narcotic Department had been tipped off that a group of Emiratis were regularly using drugs in a police officer’s house. Police also seized 40 grams of hashish during the night-time raid on the house last week. The five arrested were referred to the Dubai Public Prosecution on Sunday.

A businessman embezzled dhs660,000 from a partner after agreeing to open a business for him in Dubai. The man, who has now been jailed for a year after being sentenced for theft at Dubai Court of First Instance. The court heard the 28-year-old defendant had stolen electronic goods from his partner.However, a co-defendant, has been found not guilty of the same charge.

A plastic surgeon has been jailed for negligence over a liposuction operation. The 61-year-old surgeon and a 55-year-old anaesthetist have both been sentenced to a year in prison along with a fine of dhs10,000 and deportation in connection with the incident. Dubai Court of misdemeanours was told that they operated on a 27-year-old housewife. The woman died after undergoing surgery.

Two men have been formally charged in connection with the assassination of former Chechen army commander Sulim Yamadayev in Dubai.

A visitor faces trial for intentional murder after hitting a man in the latter's apartment with a sharp tool. The suspect is also being charged with robbery. The suspect had allegedly hit the man with a sharp tool several times in the head in the victim's flat in a residential building in Al Baraha. The injuries caused the victim's death, according to the Public Prosecution.

Two men went on trial yesterday for robbing and threatening to strangle to death a taxi driver. The two men were charged with stealing dhs5,400 and a mobile phone from the driver, not paying their dhs142 fare and threatening to kill him. Dubai Court of First Instance heard that the 28-year-old victim picked up two passengers in Sharjah in February. The two labourers, aged 33 and 27, asked the driver to take them to the Jebel Ali area via Sonapur.

An airport porter has been jailed for three months after he was caught stealing toothpaste which he took from luggage that had been forgotten by passengers. The 38-year-old porter pleaded guilty of the theft at an earlier hearing at the Dubai Court of First Instance.

A man has been sentenced at Dubai Court of First Instance to ten years in jail and fined dhs50,000 for trying to smuggle more than 5kg of cocaine in nappies. The 36-year-old man had been charged with possessing and trading drugs. Police stopped the defendant at Dubai International Airport in February because he was acting suspiciously. “He changed direction when he saw me,” an officer said. “I asked him if he had any bags and he said he didn’t, but I found two with his name on.”When they searched his luggage they found the drugs hidden inside bags of nappies.

A government employee allowed women to be smuggled into Dubai to work as prostitutes in return for sexual favours, a court heard. The man worked at a checkpoint in Hatta, Dubai Court of First Instance was told. He is accused of allowing the females to cross the Oman border on fake documents in return for sex with prostitutes. The story came to light during the trial of a woman accused of trafficking three women in 2006 who are now aged 22, 20 and 16. The court heard the 38-year-old and a woman went to their home country and bought the three girls from their families, preying on their dire financial situation.
